New Showreel, Other stuff

Posted by Wonchop - June 10th, 2010

Hello there folks.

I've just put together a new showreel, that you can either watch below, or vote 5 on here. For some reason, it's got quite a low score on NG so far. I seriously dunno how to please you people when it comes to showreels. Also, if you haven't seen Tales of Beardyman, go do it now.

/* */
Also, Weebl's been a bit slow on NG releases, as you've totally been missing out on a new animation by me about Flying Squirrels. I'll try and beg him to stick it up on Newgrounds if I can find him.

I also put up a quick installment of 'Every Everything Ever' up on Youtube, based on a topic I'm sure a few Youtube going NGers have encountered at least once. As for whether NG will see this kind of thing or not, well maybe when I try something a bit more mainstream.

If you wanna be sure to be the first to hear about this stuff, then please follow me on Twitter.

So, I'm just about finished with my animation course, where I'll soon attempt to pay off those student loans I've been cheerfully blowing on worldwide trips. Speaking of which, Comic Con's coming up next month, and you'll prolly find me sporting my goggles around the Behemoth booth. Just don't hit me okay. Then it's back home for the NG London Meet in August.

Flashwise, I may attempt something for Robot Day. We'll have a see.

New Showreel, Other stuff

"Man, Newgrounds seems to be treating the showreel harshly. Why exactly, I dunno."

It's mostly footage from the last few reels you've submitted here. When you have a "2010" demo reel it should be comprised of work from that year solely. It looks better to have yearly reels that actually focus on said year to show improvement and the growing range of projects you've tackled. Simple as that. When you have cut-and-paste footage of the same stuff we've seen it's not going to be highly praised.

A lot of people here don't seem to get the idea of showreels. The idea is to present your overall best pieces of animation so that potential employers may like it. The date is more a reference of how up to date the showreel is as opposed to what year the entire content was made.

Though you have a point (responding to incognitus's post), the employers will like it but thats it. Everyone else who watches the new showreel will just see what's mostly the old showreel and not care for it.

So you just have to not mind the score i suppose, as long as the employers see it. I'd say wait a long while before releasing a new one and provide more of your latest work, with less, (but still some) of your past work too.

That's what I get for holding off releasing the previous reel until recently.

Stewgrounds!

What JordanD said. Newgrounders don't like it because it's a showreel; it doesn't seem impressive to see parts of movies you've already put online with mediocre video quality compared to most regular Flash submissions. To me, the score makes sense. I personally wouldn't expect even a Daily 5th if I were to make a showreel... of course, I haven't made anything impressive like you have.

That video quality thing's a real bitch. I think 'Tales of Beardyman' would've probably had a better shot at notability if I knew how to export FLVs better.

Like Jonbro said, jordanD has a point about Incognitus making a point about people not liking it.

I'd say its a shame but it isn't.Dont expect anything like this becoming the 1 flash toon on newgrounds unless every other skilled animator died.Which will happen in 7 years maybe.
